How Termites Live and Feed
When it comes to wood damage, Subterranean termites are the biggest culprits. They live in huge underground colonies, usually with several nests joined by underground tunnels. Worker termites must feed the rest of the colony. To do this, they dig small underground tunnels in search of wood. Often that wood is outside, and they cause no real harm to nearby property.
A termite will return to any wood to forage, and if that wood happens to be in your home the termite will keep returning. Every termite leaves an odour trail for other termites to follow, so it won’t be long before you have a termite infestation. These can go undetected for long periods. How a Termite Bait System Works

Termites are sociable creatures. The worker termites bring food home to the colony, where the other termites consume partially regurgitated wood fibre. These pests also groom each other. As they socialise they spread the poison to others in the termite nest.

Termite bait stations are installed underground at regular intervals around the building. The baiting station consists of a perforated cylinder containing the bait. The termites enter and leave through the perforations. Visiting termites leave behind an inviting smell that other termites from the colony will recognize as their own. This will encourage them to enter the baiting station and enjoy a meal of chemically laced cellulose.
