How Termites Live and Feed
When it comes to wood damage, Subterranean termites are the biggest culprits. They live in huge underground colonies, usually with several nests joined by underground tunnels. Worker termites must feed the rest of the colony. To do this, they dig small underground tunnels in search of wood. Often that wood is outside, and they cause no real harm to nearby property.
A termite will return to any wood to forage, and if that wood happens to be in your home the termite will keep returning. Every termite leaves an odour trail for other termites to follow, so it won’t be long before you have a termite infestation. These can go undetected for long periods. Termites may be active under floors, on your roof, or behind walls. This is why we recommend regular termite inspections for all homes in Brisbane and the surrounding areas.
How a Termite Bait System Works
Termite baiting stations are placed at regular intervals around your property. The bait contains cellulose, the wood that termites eat. It is mixed with a termiticide, disrupting termite growth. The chemical kills the insects slowly. Termite baits are a deliberate termination strategy as the termites return to the colony and carry the poison back.
Termites are sociable creatures. The worker termites bring food home to the colony, where the other termites consume partially regurgitated wood fibre. These pests also groom each other. As they socialise they spread the poison to others in the termite nest.
Termite Bait Kits
Termite bait stations are installed underground at regular intervals around the building. The baiting station consists of a perforated cylinder containing the bait. The termites enter and leave through the perforations. Visiting termites leave behind an inviting smell that other termites from the colony will recognize as their own. This will encourage them to enter the baiting station and enjoy a meal of chemically laced cellulose.
Termite baits are usually placed about half a metre from the building perimeter.
DO DIY TERMITE BAITS WORK?
You can buy a DIY termite bait system, but a termite is a complex pest and difficult to get rid of. Trained and professional pest control technicians study termite habits so they know the treatment measures needed. They also have appropriate termite bait kits.
Termite bait stations need monitoring and if they don’t attract the termites as they should, they may require relocation.
Australian insurance companies won’t cover termite damage to your Brisbane home. When you consider what damage termites can cause and what it costs to fix the damage, it is probably better not to attempt DIY termite protection.

TERMITE BAITS OR BARRIERS?
Many Brisbane clients wonder which system is most appropriate, termite baits or barriers. Barriers work well and need little intervention once they have been installed. They are very effective and will offer protection against termites for years. Termite bait stations are also effective, but results can be slow and you’ll need to be patient.
The big difference is in the price. If you are willing to invest in an almost permanent termite solution, you may want to budget for the more highly-priced barriers. Even so, over the long term, baiting may be more expensive because they need regular monitoring to ensure that they remain effective.
